Thanks. Reminds me of my first meeting with Habib Koite in 1989 in Bamako, where he was still partly making his living playing Simon and Garfunkle copies at a restaurant. We talked about all the influences of music that Malian musicians had experienced during the 1960’s – even soul music ( Sam & Dave and the likes) was well known by several Malian musicians. My conclusion – later in life – was that the real “globalists” of music in the 1960’s were the Malians. Where – in the west – some of us had maybe heard a few African and Indian records on top of all the western pop,rock,soul an jazz – the Malians were , as you write, well aware of Cuban, African, French and American music.
Having listened to Habib singing Garfunkel , I remember saying to my fellow traveller, Krister Malm: It is really sad to see such a talented musicians playing covers. The night after this we went to a local music club and heard a fantastic new band playing original Malian music. The bandleader was…. Habib !
