On a slightly pedantic note, it would be good if you could be a little clearer about who is and isn’t Arab. The Mzabites, for instance, are Berbers, as were the Ahl Izzi until relatively recently. You consitently speak of Arabs and Touaregs, but the population of the central oases is better described as Arab, Touareg, other Berbers and Black populations.

As someone who has been involved for many years in presenting music from this part of the world (Tinariwen, Tartit, Mamar Kassey, Dimi Mint Abba, Etran Finatwa, Basseko Kouyate, Oumou Sangare etc.) through the the organization I founded in 1985, the World Music Institute, it is with great sadness that I have watched the dissolution of this ancient world into the chaotic Saharan version of the “Great Game” over the past 40 years.

I was wondering if the same sources in Saudi were involved in the funding but your article shows how lucrative the smuggling can be on its own. Only real way out here for the West I would guess is to get the locals fighting on their side in return for significant improvements in their lives
